There is something powerful about words. Spoken, written, shared—they have the ability to heal, to connect, and to give voice to experiences that often go unheard.
At the Croydon Smart Hub, we are proud to be developing a new spoken word poetry night that aims to do exactly that.
This initiative has grown out of conversations with two fantastic organisations. One previously delivered weekly poetry writing sessions at the BLBG Hub, supporting individuals experiencing mental health challenges. The other has a strong track record of hosting vibrant spoken word nights right here in Croydon. Together, we are exploring how to bring these experiences into one unified, sustainable programme for our community.
More Than Just a Poetry Night
This is not about creating a one-off event.
Our vision is to build something meaningful and lasting—something that supports people at every stage of their journey.
Alongside a monthly spoken word night, we will be introducing Therapoetry sessions—regular, supportive workshops designed to help local residents explore writing as a form of expression and wellbeing.
These sessions will provide a safe, welcoming space for people to:
- Reflect and express their thoughts through poetry
- Build confidence in their voice and creativity
- Connect with others in a supportive environment
- Take steps towards sharing their work publicly
For many, the journey from writing privately to performing publicly can feel daunting. Therapoetry is designed to gently bridge that gap.
Building Confidence, Creating Community
The monthly spoken word night, proposed for the last Tuesday of each month, will become a platform where voices can be heard and stories can be shared.
Participants from the Therapoetry sessions will have the opportunity—when they feel ready—to perform their work in front of a live audience. Whether it’s a first-time performance or a seasoned poet refining their craft, the space will be open, inclusive, and encouraging.
This is about building confidence.
This is about creating community.
This is about making space for voices that matter.
Our First Event
The first spoken word night took place on 7 April, hosted by spoken word artist Farhaz.
It marked the beginning of what we hope will become a regular and much-loved part of Croydon’s cultural and wellbeing landscape.
Looking Ahead
As we continue to develop this programme, we welcome collaboration, participation, and support from across the community.
Whether you are a writer, performer, or simply someone who wants to listen and be inspired, there is a place for you here.
Because sometimes, the most powerful thing we can do…
is simply speak.
